Oct 29, Colombo: A students' union has handed
a petition to the British High Commission in Colombo against setting up
of a private university affiliated to the Lancashire University in UK
in Sri Lanka.
The Socialist Students' Union (SSU) organized a protest against private
universities and the threat to free education in the country outside the
British High Commission in Colombo.
National Organizer of the SSU, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa handed over the
petition to the British High Commission opposing an alleged move to lay
the foundation stone to a private university by Prince Charles during
his visit to Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting
(CHOGM) next month.
However, the British High Commission yesterday rejected the report that
the Prince of Wales will inaugurate the new University of Central
Lancashire campus during his upcoming visit to Colombo saying that it
has never been a part of the Prince's programme.
The proposed private university affiliated to Lancashire University is
planned to be set up within the Mirigama Export Processing zone.
According to Dr. Jayatissa, the students union would continue to protest
against moves to set up private universities and ensure that the
country's free education system is safeguarded.
